Decades of Day Work: Telling the Story of "Hand Me Downs"

Mama Ada's and Grandaddy's Story

Picture
My grandmother worked for many years as a day worker... a maid. I was honored to tell her story and that of my grandfather and their hard work through the years at an event entitled Decades of Day Work III held at the Studios@620.
Part of the project was focused on a coat which my grandmother's employer gave her and how THAT coat was passed on to me... which I wear with pride and as a constant reminder that I have opportunities because of the hard work of my grandparents.
The producers  Jaye Sheldon and Lillian Dunlap came to my home and sat down and interviewed me and my mother (who was in town visiting) and recorded the stories of my grandparents Ada and Cephas Donaldson.
They then transformed those stories into a monologue which was presented by Studios@620 artistic director Bob Devin Jones.
His presentation of my family's story was amazing, heartfelt, inspirational and funny.

Your Real Stories Productions and The Studio@620 bring you“Decades of Day Work III.”  Experience the compelling, real stories of friends and neighbors--real day workers and the people who hired them. The “Decades of Day Work” series began as a response to the best-selling novel and award-winning movie, “The Help.”
This dramatic conclusion uses theater, music, video and audience discussion to tell the complex stories of a writer, a professor, a former police officer and a television news reporter — all brought to life through performances by local actors and musicians.
Folks are still raving about the first two shows… Come, be inspired!
